The Double Irish Chain Quilt Block

The double Irish chain quilt block is one of the many favorite classic quilt blocks.

The double Irish chain quilt block uses only squares. How easy can that be!

You can choose any color combination or just use your scraps. No matter what colors you use, you can be sure of amazing results.

When sewing the double Irish chain quilt, you an use the easy strip piecing and chain piecing techniques for faster assembly time.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 10 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(pink and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 2 strips 2½” x 7½” from the pink fabric.
Cut 3 strips 2½”x 5” from the pink fabric.
Cut 3 strips 2½”x 7½” from the white fabric.
Cut 2 strips 2½”x 5” from the white fabric.

For the companion block:

Cut 4 patches 2½” square from the pink fabric.
Cut 1 patch 6½” square from the white fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2½”x 6½” from the white fabric.

Step 2 - Use the strip piecing method. Using the 7½” strips, sew them together starting with a white strip, pink strip, white strip, pink strip, white strip.

Sub cut the strips into 3 rows, 2½” down x 8½” across.

Step 3 - Use the strip piecing method using the 5” strips. Start with a pink strip, alternate colors and end with a pink strip.

Sub cut the strips into 2 rows, 2½” down x 8½” across.

Step 4 - Sew the rows together starting with a white square on the top left. Alternate the rows, white….. pink to create the double Irish chain pattern. Be sure to match the seams in each row.

Step 5 - For the companion block, start with the white square for the center.

Sew one 2½”x 6½” white patch to each side of the square.

Sew a pink 2½” square patch to each end of a 2½”x 6½” white patch. Sew two rows like this.

Sew one row to the top of the white square center unit and one to the bottom to complete the companion block.

If you are making a complete quilt, just cut all of the strips 2½” and you don‘t have to worry about the length because you will be sub cutting the complete strips any way.

The double Irish chain quilt block is a fun and easy pattern that can be put together very fast. I know that traditionally this pattern is done in pink and white but just have fun with the colors you choose.

This is your quilt and you get to be as creative as you want to be.
