Lets take a look at each of the nine blocks in our card trick quilt block pattern. Each unit in this quick and easy quilt block pattern has a pattern.
Preparations: Pre-wash and iron all fabrics. Be sure to press all the seams as you go.
Step 1 - Use the
rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 5 units 3 ½ square from the tan fabric.
Cut 2 units 3 ½ square from each of the different fat quarter fabrics.
Step 2 - Use the
half square triangle
method.
Place one 3 ½ square of the fat quarter fabric or dark fabric and one 3 ½ square of the tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal from one corner to the opposite corner on the lighter fabric. Stitch Ό on each side of the drawn line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
This will give you two half square triangles 2 ½ each. You will only need to use one for each block.
Repeat the same procedure with each of the remaining fat quarter fabrics.
Step 3 - Using your rotary cutter, take the remaining 4 square units of the fat quarter fabrics and cut the squares in half diagonally making triangles.
Sub-cut only one of the triangles in half, making 2 smaller triangles from each of the fat quarter fabrics.
From the tan fabric square unit, use your rotary cutter and cut this square diagonally into 4 small triangles.
Step 4 - Use the quarter square triangle method to create a 3 triangle square unit.
Or, stitch two small triangles together from the tan fabric and black fabric. Be sure to check your pattern for the correct fabric placement in your piecing.
Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric.
Stitch the 2 triangle unit to the large brown flower triangle. Press seam allowance to the darker fabric.
Use your ruler to square up the unit to be 2 ½ square. Be sure to use your 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Step 5 - Sew a small tan triangle and a small brown flower triangle. Sew this 2 triangle unit to a black flower large triangle to complete the square. Press all seams.
Step 6 - Sew a small tan triangle and a small brown triangle. Sew this 2 triangle unit to a black large triangle to complete the square. Press all seams.
Step 7 - Sew a small tan triangle and a small black flower triangle. Sew this 2 triangle unit to a brown large triangle to complete the square. Press all seams.
