The Cut Glass Dish Quilt Block

The nine patch grid of this cut glass dish quilt block makes it a very simple pattern to complete for anyone.

The cut glass dish quilt block makes great use of the half square triangle and the basic square.

Imagine all of the possibilities available from all of the different shades of fabric.

You can also make this block any size that you want to. Or just add a few blocks for a whole new look. Just remember, there are a lot of half square triangles, but well worth the effort.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 9 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(green, yellow and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 3 patches 3½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 12 patches 3” square from the yellow fabric.
Cut 12 patches 3” square from the white fabric.

Step 4 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3” square of yellow fabric and one 3” square of white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

Complete 24 yellow/white half square triangles.

The cut glass dish quilt has nine patches. There are two different patterns of patches. One patch is the green square. The second patch is the half square triangle unit.

Step 5 - Sew two half square triangles together with the yellow triangles in the same direction. Repeat the process.

Sew two rows of 2 half square triangles together with all of the yellow triangles in the same direction.

Complete 6 half square triangle units.

Step 6 - Sew row one. Half square triangle unit, half square triangle unit, green square.

Step 7- Sew row two. Half square triangle unit, green square, half square triangle unit.

Step 8 - Sew row three. Green square, half square triangle unit, half square triangle unit.

Step 9 - Sew the rows together to complete the cut glass dish quilt block.
