The Flying Leaves Quilt Block

The flying leaves quilt block is a part of the favorite Kansas City Star collection that was published in the 1930’s.

The flying leaves quit block is very simple and basic for all levels. It uses squares, a couple of strips and half square triangles.

Think of this as a nine patch grid. You will need to assemble the units before you put the finished block together.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 9 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(green and tan)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 3 patches 3½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 1 strip 2”x 14” from the green fabric. Sub-cut the strip into four 3½” strips.
Cut 4 patches 2” square from the green fabric.
Cut 5 patches 3” square from the green fabric.
Cut 5 patches 3” square from the tan fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3” square of green fabric and one 3” square of tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

Complete 10 green/tan half square triangles.

Step 3 - To complete the outer middle unit, sew row one. Green/tan half square triangle, green square.

Sew row one to row two, which is the 3½” strip.

Complete 4 of the middle units.

Step 4 - To complete the corner units, sew row one. Green/tan half square triangle to another green/tan half square triangle. Pay attention to the direction of the green triangle to make sure you get the correct pattern.

Sew row two. Green square, green/tan half square triangle.

Sew the rows together to complete the corner unit.

Complete 2 corner units.

Step 5 - Sew row one of the flying leaves quilt block. Green square, middle unit, corner unit.

Step 6 - Sew row two. Middle unit, green square, middle unit.

Step 7 - Sew row three. Corner unit, middle unit, corner unit.

Step 8 - Sew the rows together to complete the flying leaves quilt block.
