The Four Knaves Quilt Block
The four knaves quilt block is a great pattern to do in the southwest colors. It is an easy pattern that has a look of being a little more complicated.
A quilt is the dazzling result of your efforts.
The four knaves quilt block uses triangles, large and small, but still only triangles.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 8 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(blue, brown and tan)
Backing
Batting
Step 1 - Use the
rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 1 patch 5” square from each of the blue and tan fabric. Sub-cut the square diagonally into 2 triangles from each color.
Cut 1 patch 3 ½” square from each of the blue and brown fabrics.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the tan fabric.
Cut 1 patch 3 ¼” square from the brown and tan fabric. Sub-cut the square diagonally into 2 triangles from each color.
Step 2 - Use the half square triangle

Place one 3 ½” square of blue fabric and one 3 ½” square of the tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Repeat this procedure with the brown and tan fabrics.
You will need a total of 2 half square triangles measuring 2 ½” from the blue/tan fabrics and the brown/tan fabrics.
Step 3 - Sew one brown triangle to the tan triangle of the brown/tan half square triangle unit. Be sure to refer to the picture for proper placement.
Step 4 - Sew a brown triangle to the opposite side of the tan half square triangle.
Step 5 - Sew the pieced brown triangle unit to a large tan triangle. This completes one unit of the four patch grid.
Repeat this procedure to complete another unit with the brown and tan colors.
Step 6 - Sew one tan triangle to the blue triangle of the blue/tan half square triangle unit. Be sure to refer to the picture for proper placement.
Step 7 - Sew a tan triangle to the opposite side of the blue half square triangle.
Step 8 - Step 5 - Sew the pieced brown triangle unit to a large tan triangle. This completes one unit of the four patch grid.
Repeat this procedure to complete another unit with the blue and tan colors.
Step 9 - Sew row one, brown triangle unit, blue triangle unit.
Step 10 - Sew row two, blue triangle unit, brown triangle unit.
Step 11 - Sew the rows together to complete the four knaves quilt block.
