The Fox and Geese Quilt Block

The fox and geese quilt block is a variation of the flying geese quilt block pattern. The block uses large and small units to create a twist from the traditional flying geese pattern.

The fox and geese quilt block uses half square triangles to form the geese.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(green and tan)
Backing
Batting

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from each of the green and tan fabric.
Cut 1 patch 5 ½” square from each of the green and tan fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of green fabric and one 3 ½” square of tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 4 half square triangles measuring 2 ½”.

Step 3 - Repeat the half square triangle method using the 5 ½” squares of green and tan fabric.

You will need a total of 2 half square triangles measuring 4 ½”.

Step 4 - Sew one 2 ½” half square triangle unit to one square unit. Repeat this step one more time.

Be sure to check for he correct placement direction of the half square triangles.

Step 5 - Sew one square unit to one 2 ½” half square triangle unit. Repeat this step one more time.

Step 6 - Sew row one (half square triangle/square unit) to row two (square/half triangle unit)

Repeat this step one more time.

Step 7 - Sew row one - large half square triangle unit, a completed small half square triangle/square unit.

Step 8 - Sew row two - complete small half square triangle/square unit, large half square triangle unit.

Step 9 - Sew the rows together to complete the fox and geese quilt block.

The fox and geese quilt block can be done in whatever color combination you choose.
