The Interlocked Squares Quilt Block

The interlocked squares quilt block is one of the many favorites that were originally published in the Kansas City Star.

This is one of the very easy blocks that can be completed with strip piecing. To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(light brown, dark brown and gold)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 1 strip 1½”x 14” from the light brown fabric.
Cut 1 strip 1½”x 14” from the dark brown fabric.
Cut 1 strip 1½”x 14” from the gold fabric.

Step 2 - Sew the light brown strip to the dark brown strip lengthwise.

Step 3 - Sew the gold strip to the light brown/dark brown strip.

Press all seams in the same direction.

Step 4 - With your rotary cutter, sub-cut the completed strip into 3½” units.

Step 5 - Sew row one by sewing two of the pieced units together. Pay special attention to the placement of the colors in the units. The placement of the colors is what creates the interlocked squares.

Step 6 - Sew row two by sewing the remaining pieced units together.

Step 7 - Sew the rows together to complete the interlocked squares quilt block.

This quilt block is one of the simplest blocks to make. Go ahead and create squares full of color.
