Maple Leaf Quilt Block Pattern

The maple leaf quilt block can be made using the basic nine patch grid pattern.

The maple leaf block pattern uses the half square triangles and one patch uses a little applique. This is a very easy quilt block.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarters (brown fabric)
Companion block fabric (tan fabric)
Backing Fabric
Batting

Preparations: Pre-wash and iron all fabrics. Be sure to press all the seams as you go.

Step 1 - use the rotary cutting techniques. Cut 3 patches, 2 ½” square from the fat quarter fabric (brown).
Cut 2 patches, 2 ½” square from the companion fabric (tan).
Cut 2 patches, 3 ½” square from the fat quarter fabric (brown).
Cut 2 patches, 3 ½” square from the companion fabric (tan).
Cut 1 piece 1” x 3” from the fat quarter fabric (brown) on the bias. (This is for the small strip to be appliquéd for the stem.)

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of brown or dark fabric and one 3 ½” square of the tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the marked line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

This will give you two half square triangles 2 ½” each.

Repeat the same procedure with the second 3 ½” squares of fabric.

Step 3 - using the small piece of brown fabric cut for the stem, press into thirds. The strip should finish at 3/8" wide. With the wrong side of the stem facing the right side of the tan square, applique the stem diagonally to the square, forming the stem. Trim any excess.

Step 4 - sew row one, half square triangle, half square triangle, tan square.

Step 5 - sew row two, brown square, brown square, half square triangle.

Step 6 - sew row three - appliquéd square patch, brown square, half square triangle.

Step 7 - sew the rows together to complete the maple leaf quilt block pattern.

The maple leaf quilt block pattern can be used in a sampler quilt or a full size quilt. You can use the colors of autumn to create that relaxing feeling that comes with fall. Or use soft scraps from your stash.

No matter what color choice you use, this maple leaf quilt block pattern is sure to bring the feeling of nostalgia and comfort back, just like when life’s simple pleasures were really appreciated.
