Nine Patch Quilt Block Pattern
The basic nine patch quilt block pattern is the base for so many basic quilt block patterns to create quick and easy quilting ideas.
In order to enlarge or reduce any block pattern you need to create a grid.
The first step is to determine the grid of the block. Determine how many equal divisions will make up the block. Our 9 Patch has (imagine) 9 blocks of equal size.
Say you want to make a 6” block. Cut a piece of paper the exact size of the block you want, or 6” in this case. Fold the paper into thirds in one direction. Unfold and fold into thirds in the opposite direction. This will give you a grid of nine equal squares. Each grid block will be 2”.
Be sure to allow for the ¼” seam allowance.
You are now able to divide the individual nine patch quilt blocks into squares, triangles, rectangles and more based on the design you are enlarging or reducing.
You can use the same principal to create a four patch grid. Just fold the paper in half vertically and horizontally. This gives you four equal squares when you unfold the paper.
To subdivide the grid more, you can fold each edge in to the center crease. Unfold and you will have 16 equal squares. Or four squares by four squares.
You can subdivide each square for a more complex block pattern but still keeping with the quick and easy quilting ideas.
It is possible to use the folded blocks as patterns or templates, but you are also able to use your rotary cutter and strip piecing for accuracy with easy machine piecing.
Have fun with your 9 patch blocks creating your quick and easy quilting ideas.
