What is Outline Quilting?

Outline quilting is meant to outline or enhance the patches in a block pattern making the quilt block pattern the quilting pattern also.

Stitching ¼” inside the seam line of a patch in a block pattern is called outline quilting. The stitching makes the quilted patches stand out from the rest.

Outline quilting is very easy to do for the hand quilter.

You still do not have to quilt every patch in the quilt block. You can be selective and choose the pattern you would like to stand out.

It is ok to use a combination of quilting techniques.

For example, combine outline quilting with in the ditch quilting or enhanced design quilting.

Use outline quilting to make your quilt block pattern stand out and one of the different kinds of straight line quilting patterns in the background to complement the main pattern.

You can choose different parts of your quilt to stand out and be noticed while others are in the background.

Experiment with different combinations of quilting to find what your quilting style will be.
