The Ribbon Star Quilt Block
The ribbon star quilt block is a creative twist from the pinwheel or windmill.
This quilt block was originally published by Nancy Page in the 1930’s but I am sure it was around long before that. We have seen this creative pattern passed around in the magazines and many books since then too. No matter how many times we see the ribbon star quilt block, it still looks fun and creative.
This block uses one of my favorites, the half square triangle and the basic square. A very simple quilt block that any of us can accomplish.
Put a few blocks together. Do you see the star? Or the ribbon?
Look at the difference in the look of the pattern when the star is light or dark.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 6 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(brown print and white)
Batting
Backing
Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 4 patches 3½” square from the brown print fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3½” square from the white fabric.
Cut 1 patch 2½” square from the white fabric.
Step 2 - Use the
half square triangle
method.
Place one 3½” square of brown print fabric and one 3½” square of white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Complete 8 brown print/white half square triangles.
Step 3 - Sew row one. Half square triangle (brown print pointed to the lower right), half square triangle (upper left), half square triangle (lower left).
Step 4 - Sew row two. Half square triangle (lower left), white square, half square triangle (upper right).
Step 5 - Sew row three Half square triangle (upper right), half square triangle (lower right), half square triangle (upper left).
Step 6 - Sew the rows together to complete the ribbon star quilt block.
