The Road to Oklahoma Quilt Block
The road to Oklahoma quilt block is a very easy quilt pattern that is simple for the beginner quilter to do.
It is also a nice quilt block on its own but creates a pattern within the pattern when the blocks are matched together.
The road to Oklahoma quilt block uses squares and half square triangles and is done with a 16 block grid pattern.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 8 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in four colors
(green, tan, light tan and light flower print)
Backing
Batting
Step 1 - Use the
rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½ square from the green fabric.
Cut 2 patches 2 ½ square from the green fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½ square from the tan fabric.
Cut 6 patches 2 ½ square from the light tan fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½ square from the light flower print fabric.
Step 2 - Use the
half square triangle
method.
Place one 3 ½ square of green fabric and one 3 ½ square of light flower pint fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch Ό on each side of the marked line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
You will need a total of 4 half square triangles measuring 2 ½.
Step 3 - Sew row one, green square, half square triangle, light tan square, tan square.
Step 4 - Sew row two - half square triangle, light tan square, tan square, light tan square.
Step 5 - Sew row three - light tan square, tan square, light tan square, half square triangle.
Step 6 - Sew row four - tan square, light tan square, half square triangle, green square.
Step 7 - Sew the rows together to complete the road to Oklahoma quilt block.
