The Sister Star Quilt Block

The sister star quilt block is a beautiful combination of simple squares and half square triangles.

When you use your rotary cutter and sewing machine, the sister star can be completed in a very short time.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 10 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in four colors
(green, burgundy, tan and burgundy print)
Backing
Batting

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.

Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the green fabric.
Cut 5 patches 2 ½” square from the burgundy fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the burgundy print fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the burgundy print fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½” square from the tan fabric.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the tan fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of burgundy print fabric and one 3 ½” square of tan fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 8 half square triangles measuring 2 ½”.

Step 3 - Sew row one - tan square, half square triangle, burgundy square, half square triangle, tan square.

Step 4 - Sew row two - half square triangle, burgundy print square, green square, burgundy print square, half square triangle.

Step 5 - Sew row three - burgundy square, green square, burgundy square, green square, burgundy square.

Step 6 - Sew row four - half square triangle, burgundy print square, green square, burgundy print square, half square triangle.

Step 7 - Sew row five - tan square, half square triangle, burgundy square, half square triangle, tan square.

Step 8 - Sew the rows together to complete the sister star quilt block.
