The Split Nine Patch Quilt Block
The split nine patch quilt block is an old creative twist to the basic nine patch block.
The split nine patch quilt block uses the basic square and half square triangles while sticking with the basic nine patch grid.
Your choice of color can make some big variations in this quilt block. You can use the split to create a dark and light variation.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 6 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in five colors
(purple, pink, dark purple, light purple and burgundy)
Batting
Backing
Step 1 - Use the
rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 1 patch 2 ½” square from the purple fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the purple fabric.
Cut 2 patches 2 ½” square from the pink fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from the dark purple fabric.
Cut 2 patches 2 ½” square from the light purple fabric.
Cut 1 patch 2 ½” square from the burgundy fabric.
Step 2 - Use the
half square triangle
method.
Place one 3 ½” square of purple and one 3 ½” square of dark purple fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.
Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.
Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Complete 4 purple/dark purple half square units. You will only need 3 half square units for each finished block.
Step 3 - Sew row one - purple square, pink square, purple/dark purple half square triangle.
Step 4 - Sew row two - pink square, purple/dark purple half square triangle, light purple square.
Step 5 - Sew row three - purple/dark purple half square triangle, light purple square, burgundy square.
Step 6 - Sew the rows together to complete the split nine patch quilt block.
