The Triplet Quilt Block
The triplet quilt block is one of the many that date back to the 1930’s. It was originally published in the Kansas City Star.
This quilt block uses the basic nine patch grid and quarter square triangles.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 6 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in two colors
(blue and white)
Batting
Backing
Step 1 - Use the
rotary cutting
techniques.
Cut 4 patches 2½” square from the blue fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3½” square from the blue fabric.
Cut 2 patches 2½” square from the white fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3½” square from the white fabric.
Step 2 - Use the
quarter square triangle
method.
A quarter square triangle is ¼ of a square.
For a quarter square triangle, draw diagonal lines from corner to corner (making an X) on the wrong side of the lighter fabric. Place the squares right sides together and sew ¼” on both sides of only one of the lines. Cut along both of the drawn lines. Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric. This yields 4 quarter squares or triangles.
Stitch 2 two-triangle units right sides together with the dark fabric opposite the light fabric. Pay attention to the desired color placement of the quarter square units. This creates an X or a complete quarter square triangle unit.
You will need to complete 3 quarter square triangle units.
Step 3 - Sew row one - blue square, white square, blue square.
Step 4 - Sew row two - quarter square triangle unit, quarter square triangle unit, quarter square triangle unit.
