The Twisted Star Quilt Block
The twisted star quilt block is a simple nine patch variation that looks difficult but is really a very easy quilt block to make.
The twisted star quilt block uses half square triangles and also quarter square triangles to create the twisted look.
To complete one block for a sampler quilt:
Block size: 6 inches
Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in four colors
(dark brown print, solid dark brown, medium tan, light tan)
Batting
Backing
Step 1 - Use your
rotary cutting technques.
Cut 4 patches 2 ½” square from the light tan fabric.
Cut 1 patch 2 ¼” square from the solid brown fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½“ square from the dark brown print fabric. Sub cut these squares into 4 large triangles.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½“ square from the medium tan fabric.
Cut 4 patches 3 ½“ square from the light tan fabric.
Cut 1 patch 1 ¾” square from the medium tan fabric. Sub cut these squares into 4 small triangles.
Step 2 - Use the
quarter square triangle
method to create a 3 triangle square unit.
Or, stitch two small triangles together from the medium tan fabric and light tan fabric. Be sure to check your pattern for the correct fabric placement in your piecing.
Press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric.
Stitch the 2 triangle unit to the large dark brown print triangle. Press seam allowance to the darker fabric.
Use your ruler to square up the unit to be 2 ½” square. Be sure to use your 45 degree angle on your ruler.
Make 4 units.
Step 3 - Stitch the small light tan triangles, one to each side of the brown square. Be sure to square up your unit to 2 ½” with your rotary cutter and ruler.
Step 4 - Sew row one, light tan square, 3 triangle square unit, light tan square.
Step 5 - Sew row two, 3 triangle unit, brown square unit/triangle unit, 3 triangle unit.
Step 6 - Sew row 3, light tan square, 3 triangle unit, light tan square unit.
Step 7 - Sew the rows together to complete the twisted star quilt block.
The twisted star quilt block is a fun star block with some pizzazz. Get creative with the colors you use. You can make it look as twisted as you want to.
