The Windmill Quilt Block

The windmill quilt block is another old time favorite that has so many different variations that your possibilities are unlimited. So get ready to be creative.

The windmill quilt block is made with a basic nine patch grid and half square triangles.

To complete one block for a sampler quilt:

Block size: 6 inches

Materials:
Fat quarter fabric in three colors
(black, tan and white)
Batting
Backing

Step 1 - Use the rotary cutting techniques.
Cut 5 patches 2 ½” square from the tan fabric.
Cut 2 patches 3 ½” square from both the black fabric and the white fabric.

Step 2 - Use the half square triangle method.

Place one 3 ½” square of black fabric and one 3 ½” square of the white fabric, right sides together. Draw a line on the diagonal on the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch ¼” on each side of the marked line.

Cut on the drawn line with your rotary cutter or scissors to separate the square into triangles.

Fold open the square and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Using your plastic ruler, trim the square to be 2 ½”. Be sure to use the 45 degree angle on your ruler.

You will need a total of 4 half square triangles measuring 2 ½”.

Step 3 - Sew row one - tan square, half square triangle, tan square.

Be careful to place the half square triangles in the correct direction. Refer to the picture.

Step 4 - Sew row two - half square triangle, tan square, half square triangle.

Step 5 - Sew row three - tan square, half square triangle, tan square.

Step 6 - Sew all the rows together to complete the windmill quilt block.
